Pump
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which pond pump is the right one for my pond?
The pond pump should be designed for the size and filter system of your pond. As a rule of thumb, the pond should be circulated once an hour. There are also different types of pumps. There are those that circulate a lot of water, require little power but achieve a low delivery head. These include, for example, the Oase AquaMax Eco Titanium or tube pumps such as the AquaForte HF Vario. Such pumps are ideal if the filtration is based on the gravity principle. If a little more height has to be overcome or more pressure is required, such as for the operation of a bead filter, then other pumps are recommended, such as the DM-Vario from AquaForte, the AquaForte Prime Vario, the AquaForte O-Plus or the two Aquamax models from Oase, the Expert or the Premium series. If you intend to swim in the pond, choose the Low-Voltage (LV), i.e. the 12 volt pumps so that it is safe for you and your loved ones.
How do I calculate the required flow rate of a pond pump?
In a koi pond, the entire pond volume should be pumped through the filter at least once an hour. The net pumping capacity should therefore correspond to the pond volume. Losses due to hoses, pipes and differences in height must be taken into account. It is recommended to buy an adjustable pump that is about one third oversized. This allows the pump to be adjusted as required. Another advantage is that the pump is not constantly running at 100% capacity, which extends its service life and makes it more energy efficient.
Should the pond pump run constantly?
This depends on the purpose of the pump. For pumps that transport water through the filter, it is recommended to operate them around the clock. Also in winter. This is important as otherwise the biology in the filter will die. For pumps that only operate streams, water features or similar, it can make sense to operate them only when required. In winter it is even advisable to switch off streams and water features as they cool down the water.
What is the difference between a filter pump and a water feature pump?
A filter pump pumps the water to the filter (pumped filter) or back from the filter (gravity filter) into the pond. A filter pump is therefore used to clean the water, while a water feature pump is only used for visual purposes.
How do I maintain my pond pump?
A pond pump should be cleaned at least once a year. To do this, the pump is disconnected from the power supply, dismantled and the rotor removed. The inside of the pump is then descaled and cleaned. There is a through hole in the middle of the rotor, which must also be free and can be cleaned with compressed air, for example. If the water is very calcareous, more frequent cleaning is required. After refilling the pond, cleaning is recommended after a month, as soon as the limescale precipitation is complete.
