Salt in the koi pond: correct dosage & application

KoiMedic Salt meter

Salt in koi ponds can help with algae, nitrite problems and fish health - but only in the right dosage! Find out when and how to use it correctly and why an electronic salt meter is essential.

Salt in the koi pond - how much is useful and when should it be used?

Salt is a versatile aid in koi ponds that can be used for various purposes. However, caution is required when adding salt, as incorrect dosing can have negative effects on plants and fish health. In this article, you will find out the maximum amount of salt that should be used, when it makes sense to use it and why an electronic salt meter is essential.

Maximum salt concentration - when does it end?

In principle, the salt concentration in the koi pond should not exceed 0.5 % (the physiological limit is somewhat higher). Too much salt can seriously disturb the biological balance in the pond. It is therefore important to carefully monitor and accurately measure the amount of salt added - especially if you are not sure whether there is already a residual concentration in the water.

This is where an electronic salt meter comes into play. It allows you to precisely control the salt concentration and ensures that you don't reach too high a level. Especially if you add salt regularly, an uncertain residual amount can accumulate in the water, which you can only detect with an accurate measurement. In addition, we recommend calibrating the measuring device annually. The calibration solution for electronic salt measuring devices is ideal for this in order to always obtain reliable measured values.

Why salt in the koi pond?

Salt (NaCl) has various uses in koi ponds. Here are the most important ones:

  1. Combating algae (0.15% - 0.2%)
A slight addition of salt can be effective against algae, especially filamentous algae. However, caution is advised as higher salt concentrations can also damage plants in the pond.
  2. Masking nitrite (0.05% - 0.1%)
Nitrite is a toxic waste product in pond water. Salt helps to reduce the absorption of nitrite by the koi. A concentration between 0.05% and 0.1% can have a protective effect. However, salt can also inhibit the performance of the biofilter, as the bacteria are not used to it at first. Caution is therefore advised here.
  3. Therapeutic measures (0.2% - 0.5%)
Salt is often used as a supportive measure for fish diseases or stress. However, a veterinarian specializing in fish should be consulted beforehand in the case of serious illnesses. Salt is not always the right choice and many medications are not effective at a salt concentration above 0.1%. Duration: 2-4 weeks
  4. Introduction of new koi (0.2% - 0.5%)
Salt can also prevent socialization problems after the introduction of new koi. It is important that the salt is only added once the fish have been introduced. Duration: 2-4 weeks

Important information on salt in the koi pond

other fish species

If there are other fish species in the pond besides koi, it is essential to check whether they also tolerate the salt. Not all fish species are salt-tolerant and too high a concentration can be harmful to some fish. You should therefore carry out detailed research or consult an expert before adding salt.

the correct application

We recommend adding the salt to the pond at one point and then allowing it to dissolve. This allows the salt concentration to rise slowly.

Correctly reduce the salt content in the koi pond after treatment

For optimum koi health, we recommend gradually reducing the salt content to zero after a treatment (which typically takes 2-4 weeks). The following applies:

0.1% salinity permanently - completely unproblematic
Permanently above 0.2% - not recommended

Why this recommendation?

  • Higher permanent concentrations can impair the therapeutic efficacy of future treatments
  • Too high a salt content limits your treatment options
  • Many medications are only effective at low salt concentrations

Practical tip:
Use a digital salt meter to precisely control the salt content and safely reduce it to the desired level. Regular measurements are essential, especially after treatments!

Regular water changes in the koi pond - also essential with salt

Regular water changes are also a must when using salt! This is because salt accumulates in the pond and can damage plants or impair fish health in the long term. A common mistake made by beginners is incorrect dosing: 1 kg of salt per 1'000 liters of water corresponds to a salt concentration of 0.1% - but this value only serves as a rough guide.

Why is “pi times thumb” not enough?

  • Even small errors in dosing (e.g. due to residual salt in the water) can quickly push the salt content above the safe upper limit of 0.5%.
  • Without a precise measuring device, you risk overdosing, which can be dangerous for koi and plants.

The solution: Always measure the salt content accurately!
An electronic salt meter gives you peace of mind. It not only shows the current salt content, but also helps you to add salt in a targeted manner or reduce it by changing the water. This will help you avoid mistakes that will sooner or later lead to problems.

Practical tip for beginners:

  • 1 kg salt per 1,000 liters = 0.1% - use this formula as a starting point.
  • Always measure! Especially when adding salt repeatedly or after changing the water.

Welches Salz für den Koiteich?

Regenerating salt without additives, such as Reosal, is suitable for use in koi ponds. It does not matter whether the salt is fine or in tablet form - however, we use the fine version. Never use road salt (for thawing).

Conclusion

Salt can be a valuable aid in koi ponds - be it for algae control, nitrite masking or as a supportive measure for the health of your koi. However, it is important to keep an eye on the salt concentration at all times and to use an electronic salt meter with a suitable calibration solution. This will ensure that your fish stay healthy and your pond remains in balance.
